I just purchased a Bissel Spot Bot for Pet Stains. It's nice because you can set it over a stain and walk off. It does the brushing and the suction and everything handsfree. If you want to work on a small stain you can use the manual feature as well. Although it's marketed for Pet Stains, I'm sure it can be useful for any type of stain. I bought it because I didn't want to lug out my large steam cleaner for small pet messes, but it's very heavy for a such a small machine.
